27. good fortune

with one comment

i normally work at a tourist dive of a restaurant on the weekends this summer.  for a number of reasons, though, i had to switch things around and work this past tuesday and wednesday instead.  although i’m still going to be busy this weekend doing other things, this switch means i won’t have to do the touristy-thing for a week and a half.  yay.

here’s the real reason why i’m telling you this, though.  yesterday, at the moment the restaurant opened, two men walked in to order lobster and steak.  they wanted 10oz of our best cow and 2 1/4 pounds of our finest crustaceans for lunch.  their friend was to join them shortly, and they ordered the same for him.  the steak isn’t normally served at lunch, but since the chef was around, he was happy to oblige.  with their pints, this lunch cost them around $300 before taxes and gratuities.

these two men, brothers, could afford to do this, due to their recent good fortune.  they had just come back from a meeting where they closed a deal that would allow them to retire (their words, you’ll see why).  It turns out that about a year ago, these brothers discovered 12 million tonnes (you’re reading that correctly) of quartz crystal on the family property in rural nova scotia.  yesterday morning, they sold the mining rights for the quartz for $530 Millions dollars.

Yes. $530 million dollars.  Talk about good fortune!  this is property that has been in the family for generations.  they’re not miners, and they’re not business people.  They’re just two brothers from out near Sackville who accidentally discovered $530 million dollars in the ground beneath their feet.  Now that, my friends, truly is awesome.

And the third fellow who joined them?  That person has been their one and only employee for the past year.  They needed some help doing logistics and paperwork and gruntwork since they discovered the quartz.  But they had no cash at all – only the quartz.  This person was the only guy who’d work for them.  He has worked without pay for the past year, and by all accounts of the two brothers, this deal couldn’t have happened without the time and effort of this third fellow.  Now there’s someone who’s going to be rewarded handsomely.

Anyway, I say hats off to all these guys.  They really made my day.
