Elizabeth Thompson, The Remnants Of An Army

Elizabeth Thompson (1846-1933), “The Remnants of an Army” (1879).

Thompson’s painting commemorates the arrival of the Asst. Surgeon William Brydon at Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Brydon was the lone survivor of the annihilation of the British Army between Kabul and Gandamak in January, 1842 by Afghan forces during the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42).
